The country of Romania offers an imposing landscape of medieval churches, thick forests, and on the lighter side, quaint seaside villages and historic gems. Bordering on the Black Sea, and sharing a border with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and Moldova to the northeast and east, and Bulgaria to the south, Romania is the ninth largest country of the European Union by area. The capital and largest city in Romania is Bucharest.

Romania’s economy includes successful development of dynamic telecommunications, aerospace, and weapons industries. Romania is one of the largest producers of automobiles in Europe and one of the world’s largest producers of machine tools. Romanian-based companies include Automobile Dacia, Petrom, Rompetrol, and Bitdefender. Much of the Romanian manufacturing industry consists of branch plants of EU firms, though there are some important domestic manufacturers, such as Dacia, Daewoo, Roman Bra?ov, and Igero bus. Throughout the larger cities in Romania there is a large selection of office space.

Entertainment And Dining Out

A popular favourite in Romania is Bran Castle. This is the legendary castle of the medieval king known as Vlad the Impaler, who helped inspire Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula. The Greeks, Romans, Saxons, Turks, and Slavic neighbours greatly influenced Romanian cuisine. The ingredients are always fresh and processed foods are virtually non existent. Most Romanian meals are served alongside a hearty bowl of fresh vegetable/pork/chicken soup. Cabbage is a culinary favourite and is often used in soups and salads. Specialities include Ciorba de perisoare (soup with meatballs), ciorba tãrãneascã (vegetable soup with meat and rice balls served with sour cream. Moldavian parjoale is a favourite meat dish (flat meat patties, highly spiced and served with garnishes).

Transport Information

Flying to Romania can be done through several airports, including the Otopeni International Airport in Budapest. Airport Code: OTP. This airport is situated is 17km (10 miles) north of the city and is easily accessed via the E60 road. The national airline is Tarom (RO) and Delta flies direct from New York to Bucharest. In Romania, most cities offer efficient and inexpensive bus, trolleybus, or tram service. Bucharest has a good bus and tram system and a metro. InterRail offers travel in up to 30 European countries.
