The GSI Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt is an industrial centre with principal manufactures in chemicals and machinery. There is office space in and around this industrial centre. Darmstadt is well known for this high-tech centre that is close to the Frankfurt Airport. This centre is home to the European Space Operations Centre, European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, and also has companies representing the fields of chemistry, pharmacy, information technology, and biotechnology. In telecommunications, there is a substantial Deutsche Telekom presence at the centre.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Darmstadt is home to Castle Frankenstein. Parts of this hilltop castle date back to1948. The castle and most of the surrounding land was owned by the Barons von Frankenstein until 1662, when the Baron of that time sold the property to the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt. There are claims that the castle may have inspired the Mary Shelley novel, Frankenstein and during Halloween, and other special occasions, there are special dinners held at the castle. You can also hike to the castle. For true local food, including beer and steaks—City Braustüb’l offers country style decor and a small, cosy beer garden during the summer. One of the house favourites is Schwein-haxe (Pork knuckle/shanks) of Hessen with beer sauce, two dumplings and raw sauerkraut. Another option in the area is Mondo Deli with a choice of vegetarian food, Indian curries, pasta, soups, and salads. The menu changes every day.

Transport Information

The closest airport is Frankfurt Airport, located about twenty minutes by car from Darmstadt. Trains connect Darmstadt to surrounding cities, including Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Mannheim, Mainz, and Aschaffenburg. Some ICE trains stop at the Darmstadt train station. The S3 S-Bahn line connects Darmstadt and Frankfurt. The Darmstadt Airport Shuttle bus service (AirLiner) often a better choice than the train when travelling between the airport and the city. If you are driving, the freeways A5 and A67 go by to the eastern end of Darmstadt. Follow the signs to Darmstadt/Griesheim onto the very short A672, which merges into the B26 towards Darmstadt. You can also reach Darmstadt via the B3 and B26 main roads.
