Kaunas is the second-largest city in Lithuania. It is the capital of Kaunas County and is also the headquarters for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kaunas. Located where the Nemunas and the Neris Rivers meet, Kaunas is situated near the Kaunas Reservoir, the largest body of water that is entirely within the country of Lithuania.

Entertainment And Dining Out

For an interesting day trip go and see the Kaunas railway tunnel. This 1.3 km (0.8 mile) stretch was originally built between 1859 and 1861. Now renovated this tunnel is situated near the Kaunas central railway station and showcases steam engines. You can also visit the interactive Chocolate Museum. This museum is located at Kraft Foods, the largest Lithuanian chocolate producer. At the museum you can check out the process for making chocolate. You can also see the essential ingredients such as cacao seeds, the cocoa tree leaves, and learn a few tricks about making chocolate. Lithuanian national dishes often include the appetiser piršteliai prie alaus. This is a thin, rolled up puff pastry. A popular main course is su spirgu?iais, which are essentially balls of potato and meat. One of the local restaurants serving traditional dishes is Kavos Kerai. This coffee house also offers a large selection of coffee and teas. It is located beside the President Garden.

Transport Information

Kaunas international airport is located 14 km (8 miles) from the Kaunas downtown area. There is a shuttle bus that runs between the Kaunas Airport, Savanoriu Avenue, and Kaunas Castle bus stops. The last stop is in the heart of the old town. There are also two regular routes by shuttle bus from Kaunas airport to Vilnius and Klaipeda. For alternative air travel routes Vilnius airport is located 100 km (62 miles) away. Kaunas is served by a number of major Baltic freeways and rail services from Kaunas Central Train Station. Kaunas has well developed public transport system. There are trolleybus and bus routes inside of the city.
